LAN See local area network.

landscape Print orientation in which lines of print are parallel to the long side of the paper.

Language bar Toolbar that appears when you install a second language or keyboard layout, or handwriting or speech recognition software.

Large Icons view Way of representing the contents of a folder, in which each item in the folder appears as a large icon with the file or folder name below it.

Last Known Good Configuration

LDAP Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, a standard way for programs to search a directory service.

legacy program Program written to work with an older version of Windows or with DOS.

library Backup device (like a tape drive) and the media that it writes on (like tapes).

limited account Type of user account that does not enables the user to install software; create, edit, or delete other users' accounts; or the management tools.

link Word, phrase, or picture that you can click to display another related Web page (or another page of the same Web page). Also called hyperlink.

linking In OLE, storing a link in one file that links to an object in another file.

Links toolbar Toolbar that can appear on the taskbar or in Explorer windows, showing links to places you select.

list box Box that contains a list of options, one of which is selected, usually appearing on a dialog box.

List view Way of representing the contents of a folder, in which items are listed with a tiny icon and the filename.

local File or device that is stored on or attached to the computer you are using (the local computer), rather than being stored on or attached to a computer connected to your computer by a network.

local area network (LAN) Network that connects computers that are in the same building or campus, usually with cables.

local computer Your own computer, rather than a remote computer connected to your computer over a network.

local disk Disk drive connected to your own computer (as opposed to a network disk).

local group Group stored on your own computer. User accounts can be members.

Local Intranet zone Security zone that includes the computers on your own LAN.

local printer Printer attached to your own computer.

lockout See account lockout.

Log Off command

Logged mode Startup option similar to the usual Windows way of running, except that Windows logs all the drivers it loads in the file C:\Windows\Ntbtlog.txt (assuming that Windows is installed in C:\Windows).

Logical drive Partition that is stored within an Extended partition.

logon script File that specifies what prompts to wait for and what to type in response when logging in to an Internet account or LAN.

Luna Code name for the redesigned screen design that comes with Windows. The actual name of the Luna desktop theme is the Whistler XP theme (named for the code name for Windows XP itself).

lurking Reading the messages in a newsgroup or mailing list without posting messages of your own. Entirely respectable.
